NO,you will not lose your search engine ranking.Let me start by letting you to know that search engines used to retaining your index even if you moved your wesite out of server for many days,I have tried this and found out myself! There is a domain name that i installed a script in in,when I discovered that the scripts is security risk,i uninstalled the script and monetised the website with sedo.com,I tried to search the domain and found out that the domain is still indexed.HUHH??

I don't know if search engines index by IP address or by vanity URL?Huuh, you sounds like a novice, search engine indexing your ip is security risk!!!can you answer me why many script (like forum softwares)uses anti boot software this is to avoid the registering in the forum since the boot will index it if it succeeds.
References :
http://ecash.naijacampusforum.com/

Not if your Url is the same. redirecting it seems to be an issue though. Your site is your site. IMHO If it's a better host, it could improve.
