How long until my search engine ranking improves?

I have posted links to my website on forums and my blog and actively participate in the forums, always using my website's link as my signature. Same in my blogs. But they just don't seem to be getting picked up by yahoo and msn's web crawlers. Only a few of them have come up as inlinks on my webmaster's page. How long does it usually take? Are some forums better than others? Does it depend on how often those forums are crawled or updated? Or is it something I'm doing wrong?
Can you give us your URL?

It depends on the page rank of the sites and it takes usually 9 months for a new site to start ranking well, minimum. (Called the Google Sandbox)
This stuff is changing all the time – you just want to keep putting out great content and finding relevant places to get links.

How about meta tags? are you submitting to directories? writing articles? these are all things you must do to rank in the search engines. Do a google search for your main keyword and look at the # of results… thats what you are up against. I can help you a little furthur if you would like to send me an email.

You can check to see if you site is actually indexed or not, at least with Google at https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/sitestatus
If your site has been indexed then you know you've got to work on your optimistion, before jumping ahead to link building, make sure what you've got on your site is good. Good content, good page titles and meta descriptions, image alt tags, h1 headings etc.
If it's just yahoo and MSN, then re-submit your website here:
Yahoo: https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/submit
MSN: http://search.msn.com/docs/submit.aspx
