Reading books is good, and absolutely a great way to "start" your research, but even a book released this week was written 4 to 8 months ago, perhaps based on research from a year or two ago.

You will find more current information online, for free. Try to evaluate online resources carefully, and avoid those that are designed to "sell" you something.

As noted, Search Engine Optimization is one of the cheapest and most effective strategies to build traffic. Other methods include PPC Search (Google AdWords and others, which cost money and can be expensive if you aren't very focused on your goals) and affiliate marketing (paying other web sites a commission on sales to customers they send you).

You can do it for free no problem but it will require a little time on your part.

First you need to get two books from the library:

Designing with Web Standards http://www.zeldman.com/dwws/

Reading and understanding these two books alone will put you ahead of 99.9% of webdesigners.

Then you need to read a free, reliable and up to date SEO tutorial. There are only two of these on the web that are considered worth reading.
