As a long time online marketer I can say that for the longest time I took a very hard stance against anything related to black hat SEO methods.

About 2 years back though I decided to actually start testing the efficacy of black hat methods against white hat methods to see what the engines really thought.

The reason for this is that I had multiple competitors performing what I would consider seedy SEO tactics and outranking on competitive keywords where I couldn't break the top 3 with just white hat methods.

To cut to the chase, "black hat" methods aren't all that bad depending on how you roll them out. I guess that can be restated as saying that the traditional idea of "black hat" should be redefined. In regards to paid links I don't see the moral issue as long as the link and content is actually of value.

Just as a link from a news organization or .edu/.gov are great, a paid link can help if it's handled correctly, such as a review of your site or products and so forth.

I guess my final point is what you pointed out in the beginning - the engines created this system and now they have to live with it.

I add text links to my favorite florist, favorite online casino, favorite unlicensed pharmacy, favorite travel site, etc. I like a black-and-white world where everything makes sense.
